This instrument is an inner/outer Italian virginal. In typical Italian style the keyboard is more or less centred in the instrument (instead of being to the left or right), and the left hand bridge veers away in the tenor and bass providing a deeper plucking point there. Italian rectangular virginals were popular between 1580 and 1640. Only in Naples did the tradition continue longer with the instruments of Guarracino. Rectangular virginals were often iron strung, although a few were brass strung. The compass of this instrument is GG/BB–d3.
